70% of individuals who complete a program at the Hendersonville Rescue Mission (HRM) successfully transition into stable housing.
Behind that incredible statistic is a story that began over 40 years ago with a single delivery truck and a commercial coffee pot. In 1981, George Cox was a minister-in-training driving a Little Debbie route. Every day, he saw neighbors in need and felt called to act. When a fellow church member gave him $50 “for your ministry,” George didn’t wait—he bought a coffeepot and began serving coffee and snacks right on 7th Avenue.
Today, under the 33-year leadership of Reverend Anthony McMinn, President/CEO, that small act of fellowship has grown into a life-changing campus dedicated to spiritual and physical restoration.
Steadfast Through the Storm
The Mission has always been a pillar of resilience. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they pivoted to telehealth and curbside meals to ensure no one was left behind. Says Rev. McMinn, “A big shout-out to Blue Ridge Health Services for their hard work and for the COVID tests they performed at our Good Samaritan Clinic. That was a game-changer for us to keep our doors open.”
Most recently, in the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Helene, HRM remained open and serving the community despite being without power for several days. Through this disaster, the Mission was steadfast in its commitment to serve the community. Adds McMinn with confidence, “HRM continues serving those in need and is prepared to adapt the provision of essential services as necessary, so that they are delivered in the safest possible manner.”
The Path to Transformation

HRM doesn’t just provide a bed; they provide a roadmap. Their sequential programs are designed to move guests from crisis to independence through accountability and growth.
-
Crisis & Intake (Days 1–3): Immediate stabilization and counseling to determine the best path forward
-
Next Steps (Day 3+): Accountability begins with a daily action plan, Gospel study, and job search requirements
- Turning Point Recovery: A specialized 8-month program for men overcoming addiction
-
Life Skills & Housing Readiness: Classes on budgeting, communication, and stress management to prepare for independence
-
Discipleship (Post-Employment): Focuses on money management, savings, and spiritual community connection
- Cox Place: Transitional housing providing a supportive “bridge” to a permanent home
Measured Success
While the Mission’s heart is in its history, its success is measured in changed lives. Tim Jones, COO at Hendersonville Rescue Mission, emphasizes that the goal is always to move clients toward healthy, independent, and productive lives with a spiritual base to guide their way. He is proud of the measurable impact HRM makes: “About 60% of our guests complete one of our programs, and over 70% of those folks are then able to find stable housing.”
Community Services for All
Beyond residential programs, HRM serves the broader Hendersonville community through:
-
Feeding the Hungry: Delicious, square meals open to the entire public.
-
The Clothing Closet: Providing dignity and essential gear to those who often arrive with only the clothes on their backs.
-
Good Samaritan Medical Clinic: In partnership with Blue Ridge Community Health Services, volunteer doctors provide care to those without insurance.
-
Code Grace: A critical emergency shelter that opens whenever temperatures drop to 32°F.
